Fantasy Live Updates
overview.
In a two-week sprint, I designed and shipped Fantasy Live Updates for Android, extending ESPN Fantasy game information to the lock screen so fans could follow matchups at a glance.
Working with one product manager, I translated a tightly defined PRD into a clear, platform-appropriate experience while coordinating with partners across ESPN product, design, and engineering.

understanding the system.
I reviewed ESPN Core Teams' iOS Live Activities and Android Live Updates, along with the Fantasy team’s existing iOS experience, to understand the product logic and brand patterns already in place.
I also studied competing fantasy and sports apps, Android specifications, and developer documentation to identify platform conventions, supported metadata, and sizing requirements. These inputs helped me find opportunities to improve clarity while designing within an established system.

designing the experience.
The PRD defined the content required for each lock-screen state. The collapsed view included team identities, scores, league information, and projected totals and win probability. The expanded view added each team’s three highest-scoring players and their fantasy points.
My challenge was to create a clear hierarchy and useful progression between states within Android’s limited surface area. I designed the experience across mobile screen sizes and accounted for both light and dark modes.
collaboration, handoff, and review.
Throughout the sprint, I brought the work to two design critiques and participated in weekly stand-ups, collaborating with product, design, and engineering partners to refine the hierarchy, platform behavior, and alignment with ESPN’s broader live-update ecosystem.
I then prepared the Figma file for engineering handoff, documenting the final states, responsive behavior, metadata, and light and dark mode treatments. The completed work was presented in a VP review and a cross-pillar review with product, design, and engineering leadership.
takeaways.
Constraints can sharpen prioritization. A tightly specified PRD shifted the design challenge toward hierarchy, legibility, and state transitions.
Cross-platform consistency requires interpretation. Referencing ESPN’s iOS and Android work helped me preserve shared product logic while designing for Android conventions.
Frequent feedback supports speed. Standups, design critiques, and cross-functional reviews helped the work progress from exploration to engineering-ready designs within two weeks.
